Regarding "like a dreamer": "Varaṇa" means "transmigration" here; this is an error for the earlier "Varaṇa". This King of Transmigration was the king of the country of Mithilā. Handsome in appearance, he considered himself peerless. Seeking an excelling form, he wished to compare himself to show his own extraordinary quality. At that time someone said: In Rājagṛha there is Mahākātyāyana, whose appearance is exceedingly fine, matchless in the world. The king sent [envoys] to invite him. When Kātyāyana arrived, the king went out of the palace to welcome him. The king did not equal him; people looked at Kātyāyana and none looked at the king. The king asked why, and the crowd reported: "Kātyāyana's appearance surpasses the king's." The king asked the Venerable One about his present fruition and past causes. Kātyāyana answered: "In the past I went forth, and the king was a beggar. I swept the monastery grounds, and the king came begging for food. When I finished sweeping the ground, I made the king remove dung. Only after the dung was removed did I give food to the king. Due to this karmic cause, I was born among humans and devas, obtaining handsome retribution." Having heard this, the king immediately asked to go forth as Kātyāyana's disciple. Later, together with Kātyāyana, he went to a mountain in the country of Avanti to cultivate the path, sitting in meditation in a secluded place. The king of Avanti was named Pradyota, who led various palace women into the mountains for pleasure. The palace women saw the king's handsome form and surrounded him to look. King Pradyota saw King Varaṇa and suspected lustful intent. He asked Varaṇa: "Are you an arhat?" The king replied: "No!" He then asked one by one about the remaining three fruits, and the king replied to all: "No!" He also asked: "Have you abandoned desire?" The king again replied: "No!" Pradyota said in anger: "If so, why have you entered among my harem women?" He then whipped his body until it was torn, and [Varaṇa] fell unconscious as if dead. Only at night did he regain consciousness and go to Kātyāyana's dwelling. When Kātyāyana saw him, he gave rise to compassion, and his fellow students asked to treat him. King Varaṇa said to Kātyāyana: "I beg from my master to temporarily return to my home country to assemble an army, crush that country of Avanti, and kill King Pradyota; once the matter is finished, I shall return to follow the master and cultivate the path." Kātyāyana consented to the request and told the king: "If you wish to leave, stay for one night first." Kātyāyana arranged a fine place for him to sleep, intending to induce a dream. In the dream he saw himself assembling an army to attack Avanti; his own army was crushed and defeated, he was captured by the other, his hands and feet tightly bound, red flowers placed on his head, and drums sounded sternly about to kill him. In the dream, the king cried out loudly in terror, saying: "Now I have no refuge! May the master deliver me, serve as my place of refuge, that I may attain long life!" Kātyāyana, using his supernormal power, produced fire from his fingertips and called him to awaken. He asked: "What is the matter?" His mind was not yet awake, and he still spoke of the calamitous event. Kātyāyana illuminated it with fire and asked him: "What place is this? Look for yourself!" His mind then awakened. Kātyāyana said to him: "If you attack them, you will certainly be crushed and defeated, just as seen in the dream." The king said: "May the master eliminate my poisonous intent!" Kātyāyana explained all phenomena for him: "For example, a country is a nominal designation without reality; apart from houses and dwellings, there is no distinct country." Going so far as to explain extensively various causes and conditions, down to a single atom not being a real entity; there is neither this nor that, neither enemy nor kin. Hearing this teaching, the king attained the fruit of stream-enterer, and later gradually attained the fruit of arhat.
