"Regarding ordinary persons who seek the fruit of Buddhahood: after definitely [cultivating in] the form realm, they induce the arising of the uncontaminated; because they must be born in the palace of Maheśvara in the Heaven of the Pure Abodes to attain bodhi." Here it is asked: Fascicle four of the Yogācārabhūmi says: "In the four dhyānas, the heavens where ordinary persons and noble ones share residence are each born into by virtue of the cultivation of inferior, middling, and superior grades. The Heaven of Non-Conception is subsumed under Great Fruit, having no separate place. Furthermore, there are noble ones who abide in the unshared five realms of the Pure Abodes, namely, Untroubled, Heatless, Good Manifestation, Good Vision, and Ultimate Form, through mixed cultivation of inferior, middling, superior, superior-eminent, and superior-extreme grades of the fourth dhyāna. Furthermore, there is the abode of Maheśvara that surpasses the heavens of the Pure Abodes, into which bodhisattvas of the tenth ground are able to be born through supreme cultivation." Now, observing the meaning of this doctrine: cultivating meditative absorption and so forth to bring about rebirth actually has four alternatives: First, cultivating contaminated [absorption] alone: as the eighth fascicle says regarding relinquishing the activities of merit and life-force, and so forth; for delimited saṃsāra and birth in each of the three stations across the four dhyānas, the treatise speaks only of cultivation, not of mixed cultivation; hence fascicle twelve says that where there is remaining attachment, mixed cultivation results in birth in the five Pure Abodes, without speaking of birth below. Second, cultivating uncontaminated [absorption] alone: as in all transformative saṃsāra. Third, mixed cultivation of contaminated and uncontaminated: namely, those born into the five Pure Abodes. Fascicle twelve of the Yogācārabhūmi says: "Suppose someone has already attained the contaminated and uncontaminated four dhyānas, and enters the dhyānas in continuous succession for a long time, with contaminated and uncontaminated alternating with each other, until uncontaminated manifests immediately after contaminated, and after uncontaminated one re-enters contaminated. One should know that up to this point cultivation is accomplished. Because this is for the sake of obtaining mastery over absorption, one obtains the fruit of mastery over samāpatti, and abiding in bliss in the present life becomes even more luminous and pure. Furthermore, by virtue of this, one attains the path of non-retrogression. Furthermore, it is the path capable of inducing the eminent qualities of purifying and cultivating liberations, stations of mastery, and so forth. If one dies with remaining attachment, through this cause and condition one enters the Pure Abodes," because it does not speak of birth in the lower dhyānas. That is, relying on this cultivation, one supports the karma previously created for the lower three heavens, making it become superior so as to be born into the five Pure Abodes; it is not that newly [created] karma at present can induce vipāka, because noble ones do not create karma.
