Since the fourth [alternative] states that on account of supreme cultivation of the tenth ground, the tenth ground is born there: given that those from the eighth ground onward have already undergone transformative birth, how could the tenth ground further cultivate to be born there? It is simply that the eighth ground was already born in the lower three heavenly stations of the fourth dhyāna, and now, being purely uncontaminated and surpassing the karma of the previous three grounds, it assists in inducing present karma so as to be born there; in actuality it is not a newly renewed birth, but because karma of the same plane proceeds to that place of receiving the retribution, it is called "being born in the same plane" and called "going to be born." Because the planes are distinct, it is called "going"; they do not contradict each other. The fourth alternative is being born without being supported by either [contaminated or uncontaminated mixed cultivation]: that is, all desire-realm ordinary persons and so forth fix their mind upon an object through karma of the form realm and so forth, which is named "unmoving"; it is not called unmoving because it is not experienced in a different place. Since it is said that the bodhisattva of the tenth ground is the lord of the four dhyānas, and therefore manifests the ten kinds of fruit aspects and displays the great jeweled lotus throne in the palace of Maheśvara, he must necessarily be born there, and the eighth ground cannot already have been born there. It is said only that the tenth ground undergoes supreme cultivation. Furthermore, the bodhisattva of the eighth ground is not the lord thereof, nor does transformative [existence] possess death and rebirth; even if death and rebirth were granted, what newly generated karma could there be?
