Among the third master's [points], in the Sarvāstivāda, attachment, hostility, and conceit are exclusively dull; the five views and doubt are exclusively sharp; and delusion is both sharp and dull. Now, in the Mahāyāna: views and doubt are exclusively sharp; the four [others] are both sharp and dull, because as appropriate they are admitted to accompany views and doubt; one cannot, because a view accompanies attachment and so forth, also call it dull, for there is no independent dullness. Since the others have independent dullness, attachment and so forth consequently pervade confusion regarding both principle and facts, whereas doubt is confused only regarding principle. The Renwang jing says: "Entering the fifth ground one severs doubt; yet regarding phenomenal facts one hesitates; an arhat doubting a bat is also like this," all of which are vipāka-born. Therefore, kinds of clinging to dharmas that are obstinate attachments are precisely grasping.
