Regarding the statement in the explanation of the six pervasive secondary afflictions that "restlessness is absent because they are mutually incompatible": Question: Restlessness and torpor are mutually incompatible, and they are not admitted to occur together definitely; should distraction not also fail to arise simultaneously because its characteristics are opposed? Answer: Because they are not mutually incompatible, they arise together. The present characteristics are opposed, and therefore they arise separately. Question: The modes of activity of the two pairs are mutually opposed respectively; how can they not be equal? Answer: Wavering is distraction; occurring with concentration is a single mode of activity. Elevation and depression are called restlessness and torpor; thus their two modes of activity are opposed. Because their modes of activity are distinct, their substance is also absent; this is the intention of this master.
