Unshared ignorance (āveṇikī avidyā) is of two kinds: First, that which accompanies the fundamental [afflictions], constantly operating through all parts, absent in the other consciousnesses—this is called 'unshared'. Second, that which does not accompany the fundamental [afflictions], which is called 'unshared'. Yet this has another two divisions: First, that which accompanies the minor, intermediate, and major secondary afflictions (upakleśa) but does not accompany the fundamental afflictions, which is called 'unshared'. Second, that which does not accompany the minor secondary afflictions or the fundamental ones, but accompanies the intermediate and major secondary afflictions, which is called 'unshared'. According to what is appropriate, the latter two also apply to the higher realms. However, their associations with more or fewer [afflictions] differ between the higher and lower realms, forming three alternatives: 1. Abandoned by seeing only, namely that which operates independently under the four truths; 2. Abandoned by cultivation only, namely that of the seventh consciousness; 3. Abandoned by both seeing and cultivation, namely that which is associated with wrath (krodha) and so forth.
