There is an opinion: The three levels are established with respect to mutual association of the two before and after. That is, coarse minds and mental factors of the desire realm and the first dhyāna, because their continuity before and after can be associated together with both investigation and analysis, are called the level with investigation and with analysis. In the intermediate dhyāna, coarse minds and mental factors in their continuity before and after definitely lack investigation and can only be associated together with analysis; hence it is called the level without investigation and with analysis only. From the second dhyāna upward, minds and mental factors in their continuity before and after are decisively not associated with investigation and analysis; hence it is called the level without investigation and without analysis. If subtle minds and mental factors in the desire realm, the first dhyāna, and the intermediate dhyāna are not associated with investigation and analysis, and because all forms, non-concurrent formations, and unconditioned dharmas are not associated with investigation and analysis, they are also all called the level without investigation and without analysis. Therefore, the subsequent treatise states that the level with investigation and with analysis and the level without investigation and with analysis only are exclusively levels with mind. Mindless sleep, mindless fainting, the absorption without conceptualization, birth without conceptualization, the absorption of cessation, and the nirvāṇa-realm without remainder are all called levels without mind.
