"Or they grasp that apart from the mind there are no distinct mental factors (caitta)." The original Commentary states: 'The Sautrāntikas say: there are only three mental factors.' It also says: 'Feeling (vedanā), perception (saṃjñā), formations (saṃskāra), faith (śraddhā), volition (cetanā), and other mental factors.' The Essentials asks: 'How is it known that they establish three, four, etc.?' Seeing that it does not cite a text, it immediately asks how this is known, as cited by that master of Ximing. How does he know that the original Commentary did not see that text? Fearing prolixity, it did not cite it, so raising such an interrogation is futile.
