Question: When the lower realm cognizes the body and vessel world of that higher realm, under which proposition is it subsumed? Answer: An actual object not conforming to the mind. Induced by that, it gives rise to form resulting from concentration and supernormal powers as the nimittabhāga, which belongs to that original basis; nature, realm, and bīja all do not conform to the mind. Question: For the eighth, this may be so; but since the visual and other consciousnesses are conceded to also cognize the higher, and the nimitta belongs to the higher realm, would it not, being sāsrava, conform and increase across realms? Answer: Because the form-nimitta is not the intrinsic nature of sāsrava. Or, according to karmic power, there is no increase across different realms; when induced by concentration and supernormal powers, mutual increase presents no obstacle. Another explanation: merely through the higher realm inducing the eighth consciousness's result of supernormal faculties, the nimittabhāga generated by relying on it through the visual and other consciousnesses is itself a karmic result belonging to the lower realm, so there is no fault of conformity and increase. Just as the power of supernormal faculties transforms fish, rice, and so forth, inducing the form of the result of supernormal faculties of the sixth consciousness to serve as the basis for the eighth. Or, although it relies on the eighth of another as its basis, the karmic result form is bound to the desire realm. Fascicle 4 states that the three—smell, taste, and touch—are morsel food and are bound only to the desire realm. Both explanations depend on preference; the reasoning is indeed difficult and should be contemplated. Question: When the eighth consciousness of the lower realm cognizes form resulting from concentration and supernormal powers, what is the nimittabhāga of its concomitant mental factors? Answer: It conforms to the karmic result of the cognizing mental factors, sharing the same bīja and being bound to the same lower realm, having no distinct substance. Question: When solitary discursive thought cognizes past objects and the five sense faculties, what is the nimittabhāga? Answer: It conforms to what is appropriate, explained according to the previous principles.
