According to the Biography of Vasubandhu, within three hundred years after the Buddha's extinction, there was an arhat named Kātyāyanīputra. His mother's clan was Kātyāyana, and he took his name from his mother. He initially went forth in the Sarvāstivāda school; he was originally a person of Central India, and later went to the country of Jibin. The country of Jibin is in Western India. Together with five hundred arhats and five hundred bodhisattvas, he compiled the Sarvāstivāda Abhidharma, keeping it secret without letting it circulate. A long time passed without any of the five regions of India seeing it. Later, in the country of Ayodhyā in Eastern India, there was a Dharma master named Vasubhadra, who was clever and possessed great wisdom; he went there to study, memorized it, and circulated it outside, fully as related there. Later, Kumāralāta and Śrīlāta both extensively composed treatises to propagate [it]. At first there were teachings [for] sattvas attached to existence, while the Mahāyāna Dharma-teachings were mostly concealed.
