Ximing states: 'The Tripiṭaka Master explained: "Equal awakening" (samyak-saṃbodhi) means that the immediate [path] (ānantarya-mārga) and [path of] liberation (vimukti-mārga) jointly sever the same single obstacle; hence it is called "equal awakening." It does not mean that their realizations are identical, which would be why it is termed "equal." Now, to offer a supporting explanation: in terms of the principle realized, after that there is no further obstacle obstructing the principle realized, and therefore the perception is distinct and clear. It differs from prior [stages], where subtle obstacles still remained and the perception was not yet completely clear, so that it was not called equal awakening. Calling this "equal awakening" is only with reference to the fundamental [wisdom] (mūla-jñāna), not based on the subsequent [wisdom] (pṛṣṭhalabdha-jñāna). What is meant here by this bodhi refers to the subsequent wisdom, the knowledge of all aspects (sarvākārajñatā); because it differs from what preceded it, it is termed the "superior fruit."'
