If so, how does [this] differ from the non-possession of active manifestation? This [explanation] is based on the absence of capability, whereas that [explanation] concerns not yet having arisen; therefore there is a difference. If being termed 'non-possession' is based on the absence of substantial entity, it is explained as being identical to the two kinds of possession: analytical cessation and non-analytical cessation. As for being based on seeds: for example, non-possession of the noble nature has two senses: first, mutually contrary non-possession, which is the nature of an ordinary person, established on the basis of the seeds of the two obstructions; second, harmonious [non-possession], spoken of in terms of functional capacity: when good roots are severed by false views, or prior to entering the path of vision, even if there are seeds, when their functional capacity has not yet arisen, this is also called 'non-accomplishment', which is conventionally established on the basis of uncontaminated seeds. The non-accomplishment of active manifestations is also established on the basis of seeds. Non-possession of the unconditioned: [the non-possession of] the unconditioned analytical cessation is, for people lacking spiritual lineage and those who have not yet entered the path of vision, in all cases established on the basis of the seeds of the two obstructions; after entering the path of vision, in accordance with whatever innate [forms of the] two obstructions have not yet been severed, non-possession of analytical cessation is established, because one has not yet possessed the analytical cessation realized by that [path]. Non-possession of non-analytical cessation is, as appropriate, established on the basis of the seeds and active manifestations of those conditioned phenomena, because when those phenomena are accomplished, one does not possess non-analytical [cessation].
