《論》：如四正斷義，別說三者。如四正斷約義說，四體是精進命等，雖三約義差別體是一識者。外難云：壽等約義說，一體分三蘊，正斷據義分，一進通多蘊。答：命根約義別有別勝，故三處分。正斷約義分無別勝，故一處攝。又雖不全相似，取少分喻。

The Treatise: 'Like the meaning of the four right efforts, three are spoken of distinctly.' Just as the four right efforts are spoken of conceptually as four while their entity is diligence, the life faculty and the rest, though three by conceptual difference, are in entity a single consciousness. The external challenge says: Life and the rest are spoken of conceptually, but one entity is divided into three aggregates; the right efforts are distinguished conceptually, but one diligence pervades multiple aggregates. Answer: The life faculty, by conceptual distinction, has distinct superior functions, hence it is divided across three categories. The right efforts, distinguished conceptually, have no distinct superior functions, hence they are subsumed under one category. Furthermore, although they are not completely identical, a partial analogy is taken.
