Answer: Speaking in terms of reality, in principle there are twenty-eight. But because they are objects of the mental [consciousness] and not apprehended by the five consciousnesses, here we take only the objects cognitively grasped by the five consciousnesses; therefore, each has seven paramāṇus, and not mentioning the creating [elements] is also without logical fault. If according to the Prajñaptivāda, the producing and produced paramāṇus both encompass the real and the conceptual. Furthermore, a fourfold categorization is made regarding the conceptual or real nature of paramāṇus: 1. Gross is conceptual and subtle is real: the Sautrāntika teachers; 2. Gross is real and subtle is conceptual: the Mahāyāna paramāṇus, which are subsumed under the dharma-āyatana because they are posited by conceptualization; 3. Gross and subtle are both real: the Sarvāstivādins; 4. Gross and subtle are both conceptual: the Ekavyāvahārika, Prajñaptivāda, and so forth. Furthermore, there is another fourfold categorization: 1. Both gross and subtle are conceptual: the Ekavyāvahārika school; both are real: the Sarvāstivāda; both [conceptual and real]: the Prajñaptivāda and Lokottaravāda; neither: Bhāviveka's ultimate truth. Furthermore, discussing the aggregation of paramāṇus according to the Abhidharmakośa verse: 'In the desire [realm], a soundless aggregation of paramāṇus / without faculties has eight entities; / with the body faculty, nine entities; / with any other faculty, ten entities.' The meaning of this is: if there is a body faculty, there are definitely nine entities; with any one of the remaining four [faculties], it becomes ten entities. The Abhidharmakośa says: 'If explained according to substances, eight, nine, ten, and so forth would be too few; if explained according to āyatanas, eight, nine, ten, and so forth would be too many.' The reply states: There is no fault. What is referred to as 'entities' is partly stated according to substance, namely the supporting great elements, and partly stated according to āyatana, namely the supported created forms.
