Fourth is the fault that a Buddha would lack the precepts. [The opponent] says that there is the error of increase and decrease in the Buddha-fruit: for if the seven limbs double and increase thought-moment by thought-moment, then for one who attained buddhahood long ago, the precepts would increase to be many, while for one who attained buddhahood later, the precepts would be few; how could this be called equal awakening? If it is admitted that there is increase in the causal stage but no increase in the Buddha-fruit, then the fourth minor fruit [of the arhat] should also have no increase, because its own stage is ultimate. This point is not correct. In the Buddha-fruit there may be no increase, but in the minor fruit there are superior and inferior [gradations]. If one clings to the view that in the completion of the fourth minor stage there is no increase of virtues, then one should not distinguish between the wisdom-liberated and the doubly-liberated. Furthermore, in drawing an analogy from the causal stage to argue for increase in the fruit, or drawing an analogy from the fruit to argue for no increase in the causal stage: the complete and the incomplete are different, so how can they be analogized to each other? If, seeing that there is increase in the causal stage, one only then calls it prātimokṣa vows, and objects that since there is no increase in the stage of the fruit, the Buddha would lack the precepts—then it would follow that one only obtains the fundamental [vows] through active perfuming and increase, and since in the stage of buddhahood there is neither perfuming nor preparatory application, it would follow that both the preparatory and the fundamental would be absent. Therefore, the explanation of doubling and increasing is stated with reference to the causal stage; obtaining the precepts has many varieties, as extensively analyzed elsewhere.
