Question: The treatise says that greed, anger, and ignorance—both innate and discriminative—can all possibly be associated with the five feelings. Discriminative [afflictions] of the mental ground do not exist in the realm of pure suffering, whereas in the mixed feelings of the human realm, although the five [consciousnesses] have suffering, they lack discrimination; how can it be said that all can possibly be associated with the five feelings? Answer: Based on Fascicle 59, the five consciousnesses are allowed to have discriminative afflictions; although not by their own power, they are induced by the mind. How is this known? That text says: "Afflictions that do not arise spontaneously are associated with the faculties. I shall now explain: at one time greed is associated with pleasure and joy; at one time it is associated with sorrow and suffering. Regarding hostility, it also says: hostility at one time is associated with sorrow and suffering; or at one time it is associated with joy and pleasure." Question: How is this so? Answer: It means, for instance, that someone naturally has body and mind tormented by suffering, whereupon they pay attention to the internal suffering, reflect, and give rise to a hostile mind, and so forth. Association with joy and pleasure in the mind is also the same as this. Based on the meaning of this text, in states of intense suffering, although the mind has suffering, it lacks discrimination; when pride arises through discrimination, it is not said to accompany suffering. Since the five [consciousnesses] in the human realm and mixed places have suffering, they can accompany it. The treatise further says: "Whereupon they pay attention to internal suffering, reflect, and give rise to a hostile mind; owing to this, hostility is associated with sorrow and suffering." Thus, induced by the mind, the five [consciousnesses] give rise to discrimination. Due to this, both treatises make definitive statements; otherwise, they would be contradictory.
