Discrimination without signs takes only the future as its object. Calculating discrimination takes all three times as its object. Although the text does not state how it is mutually subsumed with the three, it is in fact subsumed under calculating [discrimination], because, taking the future as its object, it is not subsumed under the first two. Being a minor portion of calculating [discrimination], it is therefore subsumed under calculating [discrimination]. The last four are all subsumed under calculating discrimination. That treatise explains: 'The remaining discriminations all have calculating discrimination as their intrinsic nature. Why? Because of conceptualizing, it sometimes seeks, sometimes investigates, sometimes is defiled, or is undefiled.' Among the three, based on the general, they are united into one; among the seven, based on the particular, they are divided into four. From this one may infer that the last four all generally take the three times as their object and are solely vitarka and vicāra. It says: 'Because of conceptualizing, the preceding three are not fixed.' In terms of breadth and narrowness, the seven are broad and the three are narrow. According to the pervasive ākāra, treatises like the Vijñapti-mātra state that the spontaneous is subsumed under intrinsic-nature [discrimination]. Sāsrava minds and mental factors, habitually taking objects in a manner distinct from the anāsrava, are called discrimination. Because this is the original intrinsic nature of the minds and mental factors, it is called intrinsic nature. The intrinsic nature is itself discrimination; furthermore, the word 'intrinsic nature' also pertains to the object. The Abhidharmasamuccaya says: 'Spontaneously operating upon one's own sphere without different discriminations regarding the signs of the observed object', which is the discrimination of intrinsic nature, called intrinsic-nature discrimination. Therefore we know that spontaneous [discrimination] is also subsumed under intrinsic nature.
