Question: When entering the attainment of cessation, there are two preparations: first, taking cessation of feeling and ideation as object; second, taking the signless realm as object. When emerging from the concentration, what object does one take? Which contact does one touch? Answer: Fascicle twelve of the Yogācāra says: 'When emerging from the attainment of cessation, one touches three kinds of contact: first, immovable contact; second, nothingness contact; third, signless contact.' That is to say, when emerging from concentration, one mostly emerges from concentration by means of three objects: first, by means of an existent object; second, by means of an objective-realm object; third, by means of an object of cessation. Through these three objects, at the time of emerging from concentration, one touches the three kinds of contact in their respective order, as stated in the Shūyào. Moreover, it is said: relying on beginners, one enters by taking cessation of feeling and ideation as object, and emerges by taking the first two objects as object, because they are alike in being conditioned. Relying on seasoned practitioners, one enters by taking the signless as object, and emerges by taking the third object as object, because they are alike in being unconditioned.
