Question: Can tactile consciousness also arise within absorption? Answer: There are two explanations. One says: it cannot. According to the earlier Fascicle Three, which says: "That is to say, when in absorption and the like, by principle there are manifold bodily sensations arising, etc.," thus there is no tactile consciousness. If so, why was it said earlier that in all absorptions there is no group of five consciousnesses, yet it is said that in absorption there is auditory consciousness? Answer: The earlier statement was based on other schools. If so, is there still a contradiction with inferential reasoning? One says: to grant that it arises entails no fault; for bodhisattvas, all five consciousnesses arise, whereas for the two vehicles it is indefinite. Question: When the manovijñāna in the absorption of the sphere of nothingness cognizes sound, perfuming sound of the desire realm together with the ear, is it of the sphere of nothingness? Answer: What is transformed by the mind of absorption pertains to the cognizing mind, unlike the auditory consciousness.
