Question: In absorption there are no five consciousnesses, yet when encountering a sound the auditory consciousness arises; during sleep the five consciousnesses are absent, yet when called to, does it arise within sleep? Answer: There are two explanations. One says: they are not analogous. When there is a mind in absorption, there is a manovijñāna, and depending upon it the auditory consciousness arises; during sleep the manovijñāna may be absent, and having no support, the auditory consciousness does not arise. Another says: during sleep, even if there is a manovijñāna, it is obscure and faint, so the auditory consciousness does not arise; in absorption the manovijñāna is lucid and clear, so upon hearing a sound the auditory consciousness arises. Ximing says: auditory consciousness arising during sleep is just like hearing sound in absorption; there is no textual obstacle.
