5.44

言未至定有十一根者，謂信等五、三無漏根、喜、捨、意根，以不生彼無色根、命。云何有意，意即第七，隨生繫故？答：略為二解。一、約三乘通意根說，即次第滅；二、據大乘有第七識起無漏說。

Regarding the statement that the unarrived dhyāna has eleven faculties: this refers to the five beginning with faith, the three untainted faculties, joy, equanimity, and the mental faculty, because one is not born in those [realms] so there are no physical form faculties or life faculty. How is there a mental faculty, since mind is precisely the seventh consciousness, which is bound according to where one is born? Answer: Briefly, there are two explanations. First, explained according to the mental faculty shared by the Three Vehicles, which is the immediately preceding mental [faculty]; second, based on the Mahāyāna teaching that the seventh consciousness exists to give rise to the anāsrava.
