Treatise: 'Beginningless time, etc.,' explains the pure continuum. Relying on the root consciousness, the uncontaminated innate seed of the eighth consciousness serves as its cause; its being repeatedly perfumed and stimulated by the evolving consciousnesses serves as its condition; and there is the continuum of the active manifestation of the pure eighth consciousness. That is, from 'even up to the ultimate' onward, it explains the completion of the continuum. Question: The seventh [consciousness] is also continuous; why is it not mentioned? Answer: Because it is not the consciousness that holds seeds, it is not mentioned. However, this mirror-like wisdom takes solely innate seeds as its cause, capable of producing the manifested consciousness that is produced, which is called newly arisen; because it can hold seeds, it is also called a seed. Therefore, this treatise states: 'One transforms and attains the newly arisen pure seed-consciousness,' not meaning [mere] seeds; it cannot be said that newly perfumed ones are superior. Through the perfuming of the sixth and seventh, the seeds of the mirror-like wisdom are accomplished. Saying that upon attaining buddhahood one 'attains the newly arisen pure seed-consciousness' is because the Buddha's qualities can only be known by a Buddha and a Buddha. Bodhisattvas do not know them; with what object could they perfume and accomplish them? Nor can it be called nominal perfuming, because it is not their object—just as a desire-realm mind, although it manifests an upper realm, does not perfume those seeds, because it takes names as object and does not take phenomena as object. Attaining the result is also like this; therefore, it is produced solely by innate seeds. Just as the initial uncontaminated [mind] is produced only when its cause is complete through other perfuming and stimulation, the accomplishment-of-action [wisdom] is also like this.
