Treatise: 'If it lacks the function of taking an object, etc.' This objects to Master Harivarman / Sthiramati: the wisdom of Buddhas and bodhisattvas would also not belong to the category of wisdom, because it lacks the cognitive function of the seeing division, like empty space, etc. This may be so for Dharmapāla, but how about Nanda? For he holds only a seeing division and no separate function. Sthiramati retorts: If it requires a function to be cognitive, there would be the fault of infinite regress; if the seeing division does not generate a cognitive function, it should be incapable of cognition. The explanation says: According to this, it is not an objection by Nanda, but only Dharmapāla and others. If so, there is also the fault of infinite regress: if the seeing division can cognize without further having a function, there should be an indeterminacy. Answer: There is no fault of infinite regress, because the function of the seeing division derives from its essence and is itself capable, without requiring an [additional] operation.
