[Regarding] the middle cessation: according to the Master's Madhyāntavibhāga-ṭīkā, the explanations of Master Dharmapāla and Master Sthiramati differ. According to Dharmapāla: the non-arising attained by severing these two graspers—non-arising being pratisaṃkhyānirodha—is nominally designated as paratantra because cessation is attained by relying on the paratantra; this means nature-nominal and truth-real. Sthiramati's explanation says: the two graspers are what is reported by parikalpita; the essential part of consciousness upon which the two graspers rely is paratantra; the severance of the essential part upon which the two graspers rely results in non-arising, non-arising being cessation, nominally called paratantra; now, saying 'the two graspers' means intending the essential nature of consciousness upon which they rely.
