Answer: There are two explanations. One says: Taking ignorance as the antecedent, through failing to understand external objects as adhipati-phala (dominant fruits), feeling is initiated. Feeling serves as the condition to produce craving; it is not that delusion arises taking feeling as its object. As for the expression 'delusion regarding the fruit of feeling produced by objects', it is because delusion is the cause of that feeling which is the fruit of objects. The treatise states: 'Because of the second [kind of delusion], delusion regarding the fruit of feeling produced by objects, one initiates craving for feeling that takes objects as its condition', and does not say 'delusion regarding objects [generates] craving'. Earlier, in fascicle 4, it states: 'Only ignorance and feeling serve as conditions to produce craving; this is not the feeling limb.' Another says: It is through the delusion [regarding] feeling produced by these second objects—delusion regarding dominant fruits. The meaning is that this feeling produced by objects is generated by delusion that is confused about external dominant fruits; that is, it is stated that this feeling is produced by the combined force of the object and delusion. Thus, it is produced by the cause/object of the feeling generated by the second object. Furthermore, taking the character 'feeling' (shou) to say 'delusion regarding the fruit of feeling' is to point out the cause by adducing the fruit that arose from the delusion, saying 'delusion regarding the fruit of feeling produced by the second objects'. Strictly stated, one should say: Taking as a condition delusion regarding objects that are confused about external dominant fruits, feeling arises; feeling that external fruit, one only then initiates craving and grasping. Earlier it states: 'Feeling has two kinds of fruits of prior karma, namely, feeling the internal vipāka fruit, and the dominant fruit of feeling produced by objects.' This means: Feeling produced by objects experiences external dominant fruits; one must not say that the object is the fruit of feeling, because the treatise states: 'Feeling has two kinds of fruits of prior karma.' Furthermore, fascicle 93 states: 'Further, through the second [kind of delusion], delusion regarding dominant fruits produced by objects, taking feeling of objects as condition, one generates greedy craving.' This explains it directly.
