6.83

《論》如從中有至本有等。問：從中有位，即名生支，於中有中亦有許死，何非老死？西明云：是生方便，六識悶絕，有第八識，故非老死。今釋有死非名老死支者，以是趣生方便攝故，未名老死。

The Treatise: 'As from the intermediate existence up to the prior-state existence, etc.' Question: From the stage of intermediate existence, it is designated the birth limb; within intermediate existence, death is also acknowledged, so why is this not aging-and-death? Ximing says: It is an expedient preparatory stage for birth; the six consciousnesses are stunned and unconscious, and the eighth consciousness is present, so it is not aging-and-death. Our present explanation is: That there is death is not termed the aging-and-death limb because it is subsumed under the expedient preparatory stage of approaching birth, and is not yet designated aging-and-death.
