Regarding these two appearances of emptiness and existence, Ximing says: The Tripiṭaka Master had two explanations. The first states: Among the four stages, the first two contemplate the emptiness of the grasped, and the latter two contemplate the emptiness of the grasper. When contemplating in this manner, the four kinds [of investigations] into names and so forth—or six, or four—are conventionally existent but substantially non-existent. Conventional existence is the other-dependent nature, which is the appearance of existence; substantial non-existence is the conceptually constructed nature, which is the appearance of emptiness. When both appearances are extinguished, one establishes the true nature.
