又解：方便可通。若成滿者，非在中間。若大乘者，上忍、第一唯第四定，餘可通依近分、中間。

Another interpretation says: The preparatory stages may be based [on the intermediate dhyāna]; but if they are brought to completion, they are not based on the intermediate [dhyāna]. In the case of the Mahāyāna, the superior degree of Acceptance and the Highest Mundane Phenomena are based exclusively on the fourth dhyāna; the rest may be universally based on the preliminary stages (sāmantaka) and the intermediate [dhyāna].
