I now say: this is not so. Four viśeṣamārgas should be added in abrupt severance; in gradual severance, by analogy, some interpretations have them and some do not. Moreover, it may be granted that in each single grade, abrupt severance can only have four, while gradual severance has five. In the three-mind path of seeing, the fault of two ānantaryamārgas and one vimuktimārga is also the same as before; there should be thirty-four explanations. Now, inferred from principle, there should be thirty-nine in total: in each of the two and three grades, gradual and abrupt each have six explanations, making twenty-four. In each single grade there are nine explanations in total, which may be understood by analogy with the preceding. In the three-mind path of seeing, there are six explanations in total. In the interpretation where a subsequent ānantaryamārga serves as the preceding vimuktimārga, upon having severed the lower grade of affliction-hindrance, a viśeṣamārga is also generated. Or, setting aside the mutually oriented ānantarya- and vimuktimārgas, it only pertains to separately generated ānantarya- and vimuktimārgas: having severed the lower affliction, desiring to sever the knowable-[hindrance], generating one viśeṣamārga makes one interpretation. Furthermore, having severed the middling grade, generating one viśeṣamārga to proceed to the path of general severance also makes one interpretation.
