I now say: this is not so. In the three-mind path of seeing, the first two are ānantaryamārgas and the third is a vimuktimārga; how does this differ from the three minds for each single grade mentioned before? This interpretation should be excluded, leaving thirty-two explanations. The Yaoji says: "All of these are still not exhaustive. In the abrupt severance of a single grade, there should be four [interpretations]: namely, the meaning of severing afflictions and realizing cessation in a single ānantaryamārga is explained as two, which is merely a single mind, and upon entering the path of seeing as likeness a viśeṣamārga is generated, thus making four explanations. Furthermore, in the separate severance of the three, two, and one grades, from the severance of the affliction-hindrance to the desire to sever the knowable-[hindrance], each generates a viśeṣamārga, which adds three viśeṣamārgas. From the thirty-three explanations held by [that] interpretation, excluding the two explanations of the three-mind path of seeing, only five explanations are retained. Since after an ānantaryamārga it is not permitted to generate a viśeṣamārga, merely taking two minds of ānantaryamārga and one mind of vimuktimārga makes thirty-one. Adding four viśeṣamārgas—adding one in the abrupt severance of a single grade, and adding one to each of the one, two, and three grades in gradual severance—makes thirty-six explanations in total. Among them, the one, two, and three grades each have ten-odd explanations, and the three-mind path of seeing has its six explanations."
