The Treatise says: "The four, such as the preliminary application, moment by moment," etc. The complete explanation is as given in the Commentary. Now, we briefly analyze this through nine topics: 1. Disclosing the essential nature; 2. Explaining the names; 3. Functions; 4. Requisite realms and stages; 5. With outflows and without outflows; 6. Subsumption of antidotes; 7. Clarification with respect to cultivation; 8. Distinctions among the four; 9. Differences between cause and fruit. As for "disclosing the essential nature": First, the essential nature strictly defined: wisdom, mundane and supramundane, universally constitutes the nature of the four paths. Thus the sixty-ninth fascicle of the Yogācārabhūmi says: "Furthermore, the cultivation of this wisdom has briefly four paths: first, preliminary application," etc. Second, the induced essential nature: it extends across morality, concentration, and wisdom. Third, the concomitant essential nature: it extends across all uncontaminated preliminary application, fundamental, and subsequently attained wisdoms, as well as all skillful expedient minds and mental factors with outflows, because these four paths span both with outflows and without outflows. The other kinds of essential nature are omitted and not analyzed.
