三、作用者，謂諸世間及出世間諸有所修，或為斷染，或為證理及勝功德，皆因四道能得成滿。若據前後相望四道，四道俱能斷惑證理，起勝功德。若據別起四道有殊，且約斷惑加行有伏煩惱之能，無間有正斷惑之用，解脫能證所得滅，勝進能有進斷餘功，證理起德准義可知。

Third, functions: all cultivations, mundane and supramundane, whether for severing defilements or for realizing the principle and superior qualities, are all fulfilled through the four paths. If based on the four paths viewed in sequence relative to one another, all four paths are capable of severing defilements, realizing the principle, and generating superior qualities. If based on the distinct arising of the four paths, they differ: when considered provisionally regarding the severance of defilements, the preliminary application has the capacity to suppress defilements, the uninterrupted has the function of directly severing defilements, the liberation is able to realize the cessation attained, and the superior progress has the efficacy of advancing to sever the remainder; realizing the principle and generating qualities can be understood by analogy.
