The Treatise states: "Because the mind is purified, there is purification, and so forth"; the various schools differ on this. The Sarvāstivādins say: The six elements constitute sentient beings, namely the four great elements, consciousness, and space; however, because the mind is primary, the mind is said to be defiled or pure. The Sautrāntikas hold that because seeds are sustained by both matter and mind, matter does not sustain them universally while mind sustains seeds universally; therefore they say that by mind sentient beings are defiled or pure. The Sthaviras and others hold that the mind can cognize matter while matter cannot cognize mind; therefore they make this statement.
