Next is the opening-and-guiding support. The Root Commentary presents three masters: The first is Nanda and others. The Yogācārabhūmi, fascicle 3, says: Furthermore, for the collection of five consciousnesses, there are not two moments arising continuously and simultaneously, nor do they arise reciprocally and immediately from one another. Moreover, after the five consciousnesses have arisen for one moment, immediately after this the mental consciousness necessarily arises; immediately after this, either distraction occurs, or the ear consciousness arises, or any one consciousness among the collection of five consciousnesses arises. Based on this text, this master does not accept that the five consciousnesses arise simultaneously, nor that they continue for two moments, nor that they arise reciprocally from one another; whether before or after, the mental consciousness necessarily arises. Therefore, the five consciousnesses necessarily use the sixth as their opening-and-guiding support.
