Another explanation: The three temperings and the severing of the hindrances of the four places occur only prior to the stages. This is because the treatise text does not state that they apply on the stages. On the stages, both hindrances—the category of affliction hindrances—can all be subdued. The four places eliminated are spoken in terms of discrimination. However, there is no textual determination; one may accept or reject this as one pleases.
