Answer: The first six categories—substance, quality, action, and so on—are easily understood, whereas regarding distinctness, capability, and incapability, there are many explanations. One interpretation says: They are subsumed under the category of similarity-and-difference, because all three are meanings of differentiation. Another interpretation says: Since the category of distinctness operates solely upon substances, it is subsumed under the category of substance. Capability and incapability, at the time when the three of substance, quality, and action yield an effect, with respect to their own effect and non-own effects, are determined as the necessary cause, and they are also subsumed under the three categories of substance and so on. The six categories are based on existence and do not admit non-existence.
