An examination shows: The meaning of the Commentary is that among the nine categories, whenever any one is excluded, an inference can be formed; it is not restricted to merely the two of "not substance" and "not existence." All the other categories possess the meaning of being excludable to form inferences. Fearing that those confused about the method would cling to the literal text and hold that only "not substance" and "not existence" can form inferences while the others cannot, it therefore speaks of eight inferences. Alternatively, based on the number of categories, there are meanings of separate binary combinations and the like, though it is not necessary to formulate them. Furthermore, not mentioning binary combinations and the like is also without fault; it was stated this way to enable students to develop diverse discernment.
