Upon checking, it is absent in [fascicle] 48, but present in 78; the phonetic sounds of forty and seventy were confounded, so checking the text was in error. Furthermore, chapter four of the Saṃdhinirmocana-sūtra is also the same. The sūtra says: What is a pāramitā? What is a proximate pāramitā (upapāramitā)? What is a great pāramitā (mahāpāramitā)? Good son, if bodhisattvas for an immeasurable time cultivate giving and so forth, accomplishing wholesome dharmas, yet the defilements still actively manifest and cannot yet be subdued, but rather they are subdued by them—namely, when during the stage of resolute conduct, weak and intermediate resolute faith evolves—this is called a pāramitā. Again, for an immeasurable time they cultivate giving and so forth, gradually increasing and accomplishing wholesome dharmas, and though the defilements still actively manifest, they can subdue them and are not subdued by them—namely, from the first bhūmi upward—this is called a proximate pāramitā. Again, for an immeasurable time they cultivate giving and so forth, increasingly intensifying and accomplishing wholesome dharmas, such that all defilements do not actively manifest—namely, from the eighth bhūmi upward—this is called a great pāramitā.
