According to the Yogācārabhūmi, fascicle 51: 'In reliance on this ālaya-vijñāna containing all seeds, the Bhagavān taught that there are the eye-dhātu, visible-form-dhātu, eye-consciousness-dhātu, up to the mind-dhātu, phenomena-dhātu, and mental-consciousness-dhātu, because there are various dhātus within the ālaya-vijñāna. Furthermore, it is just as the sūtra teaches the metaphor of a cluster of akṣa fruits, because there are many dhātus within the ālaya-vijñāna.' Also, fascicle 66 says: 'What are the various dhātus? They are the nature of mutually distinct characteristics of the eighteen dhātus. What is non-single dhātu? It is the nature of being the basis of the manifold distinctions among immeasurable sentient beings. What are immeasurable dhātus? Taken together, the two are called immeasurable dhātus.' Furthermore, fascicle 96, 'Vastusaṃgrahaṇī', states: 'The dhātu abiding in intrinsic nature: namely, the eighteen dhātus falling within one's own saṃtāna, each having distinct and determinate seeds... Furthermore, to state it briefly, although eighteen kinds of dhātus can be found, yet within each single dhātu, because of the manifold varieties of karmic destinies of sentient beings, they should be known to be immeasurable. For instance, like a great cluster of akṣa fruits in the world: within this cluster there are many varieties, but because their genus is one, although spoken of as one, they are immeasurable. Likewise, within each single dhātu there are immeasurable varieties of differences; because their genus is one, although each is spoken of as one, in reality they are immeasurable.' In addition, the Abhidharmasamuccaya-bhāṣya, fascicle 1, asks: 'What is the characteristic of the eye-dhātu?'
