4.86

釋曰：餘眼等識中有末位而久已滅，唯意識在。中有初中，六識皆有，連持生故名為相續，攝受生故名為結生。此染污意識者，緣生有故。

The exposition states: The other eye and other consciousnesses in the final state of intermediate existence have long ceased, and only the mental consciousness remains. In the beginning and middle of intermediate existence, all six consciousnesses exist; because it links and sustains birth, it is called 'succession' (saṃtāna); because it grasps and takes on birth, it is called 'linking up' birth. 'This defiled mental consciousness' is because it takes the birth-existence as its object.
