[Zhizhou] examines [this] saying: If one explains it by means of the preparatory [absorption], I fear the difficulty is not resolved, because a non-returner of gradual progression can abandon the afflictions [abandoned by] cultivation relying on the preparatory [absorption]. If one says, "I speak relying on the path of seeing," then a bodhisattva's path of seeing, relying on the fundamental concentration, should also abandon [afflictions abandoned by] cultivation. If one says, "It is stated only in terms of the lesser noble beings," then for a person who leaps over the first fruit, the six grades of afflictions of desire should not be able to be eliminated, because they rely on the preparatory [absorption]. If one says, "They can abandon them because they have previously suppressed them," then this is due to the difference between being suppressed and not being suppressed; what does it have to do with the distinction between relying on the fundamental or preparatory [absorption]? Because of this, what fault is there in having the companions suppressed and abandoned by seeing?
