According to that sūtra: "Therein, ignorance has two functions: first, delusion regarding conditions causes sentient beings to be confused; second, it provides a cause for volitional formations. Volitional formations have two functions: first, producing future retributions; second, providing a cause for consciousness. Consciousness has two functions: first, making existence continuous; second, providing a cause for name-and-form. Name-and-form has two functions: first, mutually assisting and completing one another; second, providing a cause for the six sense bases. The six sense bases have two functions: first, cognitive grasp of the six objects; second, providing a cause for contact. Contact has two functions: first, contacting the cognitive object; second, providing a cause for feeling. Feeling has two functions: first, experiencing aversion, affection, and so forth; second, providing a cause for craving. Craving has two functions: first, generating greed toward what can be defiled; second, providing a cause for grasping. Grasping has two functions: first, increasing the defiling bondage of afflictions; second, providing a cause for existence. Existence has two functions: first, enabling birth in other destinies; second, providing a cause for birth. Birth has two functions: first, increasing the five aggregates; second, providing a cause for aging-and-death. Aging has two functions: first, maturing the faculties; second, providing a cause for death. Death has two functions: first, destroying the body of the five aggregates; second, causing continuity without interruption through lack of seeing and knowing." That treatise says: "Destroying the five aggregates acts as a cause for future birth; because of not seeing and knowing, it can act as a cause for future birth."
