The commentary states: The first nature is not awakened to by worldly wisdom, hence it is termed 'subtle.' Within the paratantra, because mind, mental factors, and the like are constantly manifest, it is therefore termed 'coarse.' Because all ordinary beings fail to penetrate the pariniṣpanna-svabhāva, it is termed 'extremely subtle'; because the noble ones of the two vehicles have still not fully comprehended it, it is termed 'extremely subtle.' 'To see' refers to initial seeing. 'To comprehend' refers to subsequent comprehension. It is also said: 'One is devoid of substance yet able to transform what has substance; one has substance and transforms what has and lacks substance; one has substance yet is not able to transform.'
