The Mahāyānasaṃgraha explains this solely in view of substance and function, whereas the Yogācārabhūmi clarifies it purely on the basis of cause and effect; the present Treatise combines both. The basic text of the Mahāyānasaṃgraha states: "Do the seeds of all defiled dharmas in the ālaya-vijñāna reside as distinct and different, or do they reside as not different? It is not that those seeds exist as distinct real entities residing within it, nor are they not different." Asvabhāva's commentary (the second fascicle) explains: "All seeds are particular functional capacities of the ālaya; just as the operation of dharmas and the substance of dharmas are neither identical nor different, this too is likewise." Yogācārabhūmi, fascicle 52, says: "What are seeds? It is not that, when conditioned factors are analyzed, there are distinct real entities termed 'seeds,' nor are they anywhere else. Rather, it is merely that conditioned factors are designated as seeds and also designated as results in according with such lineage, such arisen-similars, and such disposition; and results and seeds do not intermingle. With respect to past conditioned factors, these are called results; with respect to future conditioned factors, these are called seeds. In relation to those dharmas, their being different or not different cannot be definitively asserted, just like true thusness."
