Asaṅga's *Mahāyānasaṃgraha* is roughly cited in the Commentary, but Asabhāva's and others' commentaries are not mentioned by the Commentary, causing beginner students to waver and find it difficult to progress. Now the root [text] and commentary are cited in their essentials, in the hope that practitioners will not be impeded by omissions. Asaṅga's Treatise says: 'If someone passes away from this non-concentrated plane and, when being reborn, relies on the intermediate state mind to generate a defiled mental consciousness that links up birth in succession, this defiled mental consciousness ceases in the intermediate state, and in the mother's womb the consciousness and the kalala mutually blend. If that mental consciousness were to blend with it, then after blending, relying on this consciousness, a mental consciousness would turn in the mother's womb; if so, there would be two mental consciousnesses operating simultaneously in the mother's womb.' Asabhāva's commentary states: 'The 'non-concentrated plane' refers to the desire realm. 'Passing away' means dying. 'Relying on the state of intermediate existence' means relying on the intermediate period between the two existences of death and birth. 'Generating defilement' means it is accompanied by attachment and resentment, due to having inverted views.'
