Explanation: That is, an anāgāmin who relies on the path of six practices, aspiring to the higher and reviling the lower, attains formless absorption without severing defilements of the form realm. The 'path of higher progress' is precisely the path of six practices; in contrast to the previous path of severing, it receives the name 'higher progress'; yet only by being able to enter formless liberation can one enter the attainment of extinction. The third proposition refers to this practitioner who diligently seeks separation from desire, relying on the path of severing fetters, and gradually becomes able to enter the tranquil liberation-absorption of the formless realm. The fourth proposition refers to excluding the above characteristics. The resolution is as reconciled in the Commentary; or, as a Vijñapti-mātra master says: 'I do not take the words of the Abhidharmasamuccaya-vyākhyā as an authoritative measure (pramāṇa); why use it to raise an objection?'
