According to the Laṅkāvatāra-sūtra, the seventh chapter on the limbs of the path clarifies the distinction between the first six stages and the seventh stage and beyond, compared to the attainment of extinction entered by those of the two vehicles. Thus that sūtra states: 'The Buddha said to Mahāmati: Bodhisattvas from the first stage up to the sixth stage enter the attainment of extinction, and śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas also enter the attainment of extinction. Mahāmati! Bodhisattva-mahāsattvas enter the attainment of extinction from moment to moment in the seventh stage, because bodhisattvas are all able to remain detached from the characteristics of existence and non-existence of all dharmas. Mahāmati! Śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas cannot enter the attainment of extinction from moment to moment, because śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas enter the attainment of extinction by taking conditioned activities as cognitive objects, conforming to the realms of object-grasped and grasper; therefore śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas cannot enter the moment-to-moment extinction of the seventh stage.'
