This refutes an external objection. The intention of the external objection is: 'In the fourth dhyāna, all levels are alike in being free from the attachment to Śubhakṛtsna. When one regresses and re-attains the fourth dhyāna, attachment to the heaven of non-conception must also be abandoned. When later born, why are they not right in that heaven instead of abiding in the lower three places?' The Commentary's intended reply is: 'If freedom from attachment being the same caused them to be born there, then that heaven should not have nine abodes, because the freedom from attachment is the same. Since the nine abodes are distinct, it is clear that while freedom from attachment is the same, cultivation through perfuming is different. Although they re-attain the fourth dhyāna, they have not yet had the leisure to cultivate the absorption of non-conception before dying; so what fault is there in being born in the lower three?'
