Before the seventh bhūmi, the attainment by the two vehicles and the like is called initial. Therefore the twelfth fascicle of the Yogācārabhūmi says: 'Furthermore, how does one enter absorptions by skipping? Namely, precisely because of having attained complete purity, from the first dhyāna one immediately skips into the third dhyāna, from the third immediately skips into the sphere of boundless space, from the sphere of space immediately skips into the sphere of nothingness, and so forth in reverse skipping likewise. Because it is extremely distant, none can skip past a third attainment, with the sole exception of the Tathāgata and great bodhisattvas who have transcended the second asaṃkhyeya, because they enter various absorptions at will.'
