According to the explanation of its aspects in Fascicle 42 of the Yogācārabhūmi: What is a bodhisattva's armor-like vigor? Namely, before generating preparatory vigor, a bodhisattva's mind is valiant and first dons the armor of vows: 'If, in order to liberate a single sentient being from suffering, a thousand great kalpas were treated as one day and night, and I were to dwell in hell and not in any other realm, and even if it took a bodhisattva that long to realize awakening—even if it took hundreds of thousands of koṭis of times more kalpas than that before realizing awakening, my valiance would never falter or regress.' What is a bodhisattva's vigor that gathers wholesome dharmas? Namely, all the vigor of a bodhisattva that can serve as the preparation for the perfections such as giving and accomplish giving, etc. Furthermore, because this vigor is the supreme cause for cultivating, realizing, and accomplishing all wholesome dharmas of awakening, whereas other things are not so. For this reason, the Tathāgata in various ways praises vigor as being able to realize awakening. What is a bodhisattva's vigor that benefits sentient beings? Namely, this vigor is of eleven kinds, as explained in the chapter on morality; what was explained there as morality is here explained as vigor, as has already been cited above.
